Education and Care First Aid

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

This course applies to educators and support staff working in education or children’s services who are required to respond in the event of a first aid emergency. It incorporates the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults.

Course Content:

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.


Topics include:

+ Differences between adults and children for provision of first aid

+ Normal clinical values for children

+ Airway management, including infant airway

+ CPR for adults, children and infants

+ Automated External Defibrillation

+ Medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy and convulsions

+ Infection control and First Aid for minor wounds

+ Risk management for asthma and anaphylaxis

+ Anaphylaxis emergency response

+ Asthma emergency response

+ Bleeding, fractures, burns and other trauma

+ Hyperthermia and hypothermia

+ Eye and soft tissue injuries

+ Venomous bites and stings

+ Head, chest and abdominal injuries

+ Assessment of the sick and injured

+ Communicating details of an incident

+ Reporting requirements in education and children’s services

+ Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents


Entry Requirements

There are no prerequisite units. Participants will need the ability to meet the physical demands of providing first aid. Participants will also need oral communication skills to make an accurate verbal report to emergency services and writing skills to complete incident reports and other first-aid management documentation. Prior to the start of face-to-face training, there may be a short knowledge quiz to check language, literacy and numeracy skills, as required.


Assessment Methods

Progressive assessment throughout the course, including the demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Note that the provision of CPR must be demonstrated on the floor.
